Why you should be thinking about SEO everyday
Written by Rowan Govender

SEO, or Search Engine Optimisation, is the system that allows you to optimise a website or web page to ensure that it is appears high up on a search engine's results. This process works by creating or adapting the content of the page so that it's well suited for a search engine algorithm.

Some of the ways you can use SEO is by including specific keywords, altering the HTML, and using backlinks. A well optimised page or site will ensure that more users visit since it'll be one of the first options they can choose from in the search engine results. SEO doesn't only apply to written articles, but can also be applied to other types of searches such as image or video.

The thing is that SEO doesn't work like the index of a book. You don't just do it once and expected it to work forever. SEO is constantly evolving and changing, which is why it's important to be up to date with the changes made to the various search engines such as Google or Bing. For example, Google makes anywhere between 500 and 600 changes a year. These kind of changes include updates to Google Panda and Pengiun (which are two groups of rules that affect Google's search algorithm), and Page Layout. How much these changes affect your search result ranking may vary, but your ranking will undoubtedly be affected.

How can you ensure that your business' website is properly optimised?

Gregg Thorpe, of the SEO company First Place Positioning, discusses how difficult it is to stay on top of search engine changes:

“...the factors taken into consideration range so greatly [that] an in-depth analysis of the ranking website is needed to be completed to determine what your site needs the most. Focusing on just one aspect of search engine optimization generally won’t get the job done. I can list over 100 factors to consider but to overwhelm you at this point would be pointless.”

As a result, he recommends you visit the First place positioning blog in order to stay on top of these changes. If you're doing SEO yourself, it would be a good idea to find a website or blog that provides regular SEO updates. If you hire a company to do SEO for you, it's best that you ensure that they have a good reputation of staying current, or you may find your page slipping down the search results pretty quickly.

Considering how often search engines make changes that affect SEO, you're probably asking yourself if you should your main focus be writing for SEO, or writing for people?

In the past, many people assumed that if you were writing for SEO, you were writing for machines. Today many people ask why not write for both SEO and your audience? Reid Bandremer thinks that it's very possible for a writer to create valuable content that is appealing to readers and also works well for SEO:

“Identify the needs of all three parties – yourself, your readers, and the search engines – for every piece, and devise a tactic that meets needs of each party. Different pieces serve different needs, and every writer needs to figure out their own sweet spot.”

About.com also offers various tips that can help your website be both audience and SEO friendly, such as:

  • writing relevant content
  • putting conclusions near the start of your article
  • using lists instead of paragraphs

These are just some of the ideas that you need to keep in mind in the ever changing world of SEO.
