Making the most out of LinkedIn for your business

LinkedIn is a social networking tool for professionals in various careers, and is used so professionals can network online. Most people are aware of the various benefits LinkedIn provides to:  uploading a CV, listing work experience and other relevant accomplishments etc.  As a business owner and entrepreneur, LinkedIn also provides a good platform to network in order to grow your business while showcasing your services and products. Registering a company page is increases your businesses visibility online and also serves as a recruitment tool because it facilitates job listings.

LinkedIn recently added some new features to its offering.

First on the list is a new look for their Company Pages, which is part of the process of simplifying the LinkedIn experience. Some of the changes for companies are listed here as described by the LinkedIn team :  

  • We know a picture is worth a thousand words, so we’ve provided companies with the ability to easily add an image that best represents their company and brand. Like the photo on a member’s profile, this image helps companies establish their identity on LinkedIn.
  • We’ve made the update stream more relevant for each member, which means companies are able to share status updates and job opportunities with the right members on LinkedIn. 

For the individual member LinkedIn also has some exciting new changes in place:

  •  The new streamlined design makes it easier for you to find exactly what you are looking for, whether it’s company news and information, career opportunities,  products and services, or insights.
  • Company updates are front and center, enabling you to quickly comment, like, or share relevant company updates with your professional network.

 So now that you've gotten a better idea of what LinkedIn is, and their latest update to the LinkedIn service, what do you need to do to ensure that you get the most out of it? Here are some ideas to get you going:

Expand your network

LinkedIn is all about networking, and by expanding your network of first degree contacts, you'll also be able to expand your second and third degree contacts. This in turn will help your profile gain exposure.

Increase your company presence online

By creating a LinkedIn profile, you tap into an audience of the thousands of professionals and companies that are already registered on LinkedIn. These professionals and companies will be able to access your company's LinkedIn profile quickly and easily.

Use the Network Update

Once you've registered on LinkedIn and have started creating your network, you'll be able to keep your first degree connections up to date using the Network Update feature. Much like a Facebook status update, you can use it to make announcements that are relevant to your company, like a new product launch or an article on the latest trends in your market.

Create or take part in LinkedIn groups

LinkedIn has a large variety of discussion groups that you can take part in or help grow. Taking part in relevant discussion groups will help you get in touch with like-minded professionals or potential employers.

Optimise for SEO

If your LinkedIn profile page is publicly available, you'll be able to use a search engine to find it. In order to ensure that you get as much traffic as possible, you'll need to optimise your profile for Search Engine Optimisation (SEO).
